Veterans Day

“Veterans Day is an official United States holiday honoring armed service veterans. It is a federal holiday that is observed on November 11th. It coincides with other holidays such as Armistice Day or Remembrance Day, which are celebrated in other parts of the world and also mark the anniversary of the signing of the Armistice that ended World War I. (Major hostilities of World War I were formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918 with the German signing of the Armistice.)

Veterans Day is not to be confused with Memorial Day; Veterans Day celebrates the service of all U.S. military veterans, while Memorial Day is a day of remembering the men and women who died while serving.” (Source)

Thank you- to all our Veterans.

Recently we celebrated my aunt and uncle’s 50th wedding anniversary! My aunt and uncle are avid golfers, so my cousins threw a surprise golf outing (and dinner) as their anniversary party! While the day was a little windy, it didn’t stop the golfers from having a good time (no, I did not golf). Afterwards, everyone sat down for dinner and desserts. It was wonderful to see so many friends and family, and to celebrate a joyous occasion!

I volunteered to bring desserts. Would you like to see what I made?

Chocolate cupcakes, decorated with vanilla bean buttercream frosting. I tinted the frosting green and used a grass tip for piping. I also added a sugar pearl as a golf ball. Can you see the little golf ball on each cupcake?!

These are white chocolate golf balls. In one basket, the golf balls were filled with homemade caramel. In the other basket, the golf balls had a chocolate truffle filling.

I also made vanilla bean sugar cookies, that I decorated with their monogram. The cookies are iced with gold royal icing, then when the icing was dry, I dry dusted them with gold luster dust (it gave the cookies a nice little sparkle!). Then using white royal icing, I piped on the monogram and the border.

Not shown: I also made a dessert tray with brownies, brown butter chocolate chip cookies, and snickerdoodles.

It’s been a while since I have posted a “Photo Friday”!

Last week Mike and Nadia were home and it was pretty much a feeding frenzy! We ate very well for the week :)

One of the days included a trip to Melt (we like Melt: here and here!), and the following sandwiches were consumed! A word of warning- the sandwiches are BIG and delicious!

This was my sandwich- it is the special for the month of April: The Corny Beast:
“ Our wicked version of the almighty corndog! An ultra jumbo all beef dog char-grilled then stuffed inside the sandwich with double American cheese.  Slathered with our special cornbread batter then deep fried. The result is pure carnival goodness!  Chipotle ketchup on the side for dipping.”

Nick had the Westside Monte Cristo and added bacon:
“ honey ham, smoked turkey, swiss, american, beer battered, mixed berry preserves”

Nadia had the Hot Italian:
“ grilled salami, honey ham, pepperoni, sun-dried tomato pesto, roasted garlic, provolone”

Mom T. had the Spinach Pie and added grilled chicken:
“ wilted garlic spinach, roasted red peppers, grilled onions, feta”

Dad T. had the Blackened Blue Burger, no grilled onions, added mushrooms and bacon:
“ cast iron blackened, grilled onions, blue cheese”

Mike had the Fat City Burger:
“ salami, honey ham, crisp bacon, swiss, american”

We all had full bellies after that trip!

The rest of the week was filled with more good food (mom made homemade beefaroni, I made cabbage rolls (mom T.’s recipe!), and Nadia made her delicious and creamy flan (just to name a few things!)! And I was too busy eating to take any more pictures!
